CEPHEUS picosecond laser

Due to its so-called cold material processing, the CEPHEUS ultrashort pulse laser is particularly suitable for all processes in which damage to the material is undesirable.

The CEPHEUS is a compact ultra-short pulse laser. The pulse durations of this diode-pumped, mode-locked solid-state laser are typically <15 ps. These ultrashort laser pulses enable nonlinear multiphoton absorption processes that make material processing largely independent of the laser wavelength. This means that almost all materials can be processed, even those that are transparent at the laser wavelength. Learn all about its specialty for the medical industry with the Permablack process.

Another advantage of ultrashort laser pulse durations is that material ablation is not based on the generation of heat as is the case with nanosecond lasers. Rather, this is a so-called “cold ablation”. Therefore, the CEPHEUS picosecond laser is used for all laser processing operations where damage due to melting, deformation or discoloration due to heat input is undesirable.

Thus, the CEPHEUS is used wherever precision requirements can no longer be met by a nanosecond laser.

The CEPHEUS laser is designed to be as versatile as possible. It delivers both high pulse energies of up to 300 μJ, for example for drilling applications, and high repetition rates for fast machining. This variability allows the available optical power to be efficiently applied and the machining process to be optimized in terms of quality and speed.

The system architecture of the CEPHEUS also allows working in burst mode. In this mode of operation, instead of a single pulse, the laser emits a set of pulses within a short period of time while maintaining a consistently high pulse energy. Of course, the relevant parameters can also be optimally adjusted to the process.

The laser can be easily integrated into a processing system due to its extremely compact design. The 12W and 16W variants are equipped with air cooling. The laser concept and its outstanding opto-mechanical implementation guarantee excellent stability and ruggedness, ideally suited for multi-layer use in industry.
